FAQ

Frequently Asked Question On Deep Cryogenic Treatment

We process most material with very good results. The benefits for various materials may be different though. Tool steels will show an increase in abrasive wear life, whereas a non-ferrous metal like aluminum will not. However, aluminum will be stress-relieved, stabilized, show an increase in strength, heat dissipation and machinability. We process a very wide range of items: Drills, taps, end mills, carbide inserts, planer knives, slitters, etc. Companies can immediately see improved cost savings through improved tool life and reduced machine downtime. We also process a wide range of automotive components: engines, axles, gears, radiators, and spark plugs. Cryogenics is not the answer to everything, but it is very effective on all steels, alloys, and other metals as well as carbon fiber, kevlar, some plastics and polymers. Electronics is also on the list. Many other materials are under experimentation and still others have yet to be considered. If you have an application in mind, let us know. We are constantly trying new things and would be happy to test new products with you.
Sub-Zero is performed by heat treaters to convert retained austenite to martensite. It usually takes place at about -140°F (-96°C). There is no specific profile to follow, and Sub-Zero does not seem to have any effect on cast iron or aluminum or other metals and plastics. Case studies have shown that Sub-Zero is far less effective in strengthening metals versus proper Deep cryogenic treatment.
No. There is no significant increase in the hardness of treated parts. Some metals may see 1 or 2 points of increase on the Rockwell scale. More importantly, though, the part microstructure becomes more uniform and the hardness becomes consistent throughout the part.
No. Our process alters the entire cross-section of the tool or part being processed. It is considered a one-time process that will last the life of the part. The benefits of our deep cryogenic process are for the most part permanent. When processed, the entire structure of the material is improved, not just the surface. The grain structure becomes “locked” in place. Atoms are always in motion at the molecular level. However, the changes created by the process are permanent unless undone by extreme heat.
No. The deep cryogenic process is a one-time process and earlier you do DCT life will be higher. Tools may be processed sharp or dull. And since cryogenics is a one-time treatment affecting the part to the core, you can re-sharpen the tool as many times as necessary without having to re-cryogenically treat the part. Therefore, you may wish to treat new tools or tools that have not been worn excessively to obtain the maximum amount of life for the least amount of cost.

Yes, absolutely. In fact, a treated part or blade will not only last longer, it will also obtain and hold a superfine edge not normally achievable prior to treatment.

A typical treatment cycle will take 36 to 48 hours. Turnaround times average three days (excluding shipping time), but will depend on scheduling, quantity and size of the order.

No. Our process is completely dry. Parts never come in contact with liquid. The LN2 evaporates and cools the chamber and is circulated internally by a fan.
